Panchkarma

Traditional Ayurvedic Detoxification

What is Ayurvedic Panchkarma treatment?

The word ‘Panchkarma’ is derived from two words; ‘Panch’ (meaning Five) and ‘Karma’ (meaning Procedures). The Five types of Body Detox Procedures are known as ‘Panchkarma’.

The name of the five procedures is –

  • Vaman (Therapeutic Vomiting)
  • Virechan (Purgation)
  • Basti (Ayurvedic Oil Enema/ Ayurvedic Herbal Enema)
  • Nasya (Nasal medication)
  • Siravedh or Rakta mokshan (Ayurvedic blood-letting)

The therapy performs in three stages, such as-

  • Purva Karma (Pre-treatment)
  • Pradhan Karma (Main line of treatment)
  • Paschat Karma (Post-treatment)

The patient who is selected for any of the Panchkarma (Body detox procedures), must invariably undergo all three stages.

Pre-treatment consists of Ayurvedic Oil Massage (Therapeutic Massage) – ‘Abhyangam’ and Full Body Steam – ‘Swedanam’. In many cases, we recommend patients to consume increasing dose of ayurvedic herbal oil or pure cow’s ghee during morning hours for around 5 days. It liquifies the fat soluble and water-soluble toxins deposited in body tissues.

The main line of treatment is different detox therapies. It may vary person to person, according to the body type, body strength, season and as per the disease condition. Healthy person can also go for the Panchkarma treatment to remain healthy forever. Our body has some natural ways to flush out the body waste or toxins deposited in our body, so we use these ways to flush out toxins during this main line of treatment. We give or insert some special herbs to the patient on the day of main line of treatment, and by that way, the toxins deposited in body come out easily with this therapy.

Post-treatment is mainly focus on diet plan. Basically, it is 3 to 7 days dietary advise which patients need to follow strictly to regain their health and strength.
