Abhyangam

A healthy way to reduce stress and anxiety

What is Abhyangam- An Ayurvedic Massage?

Abhyangam is a popular, full-body Ayurvedic massage that involves the use of warm, medicated oil and rhythmic, gentle strokes. The massage is performed with the patient lying on a specially designed massage table or on the floor, using a combination of deep tissue techniques and specific pressure points.

The warm oil used in Abhyangam is typically chosen based on the patient’s dosha, or Ayurvedic constitution. The oil is heated to a comfortable temperature and applied generously to the entire body, from head to toe. The massage therapist then uses long, sweeping movements to distribute the oil evenly over the skin, with a focus on areas of tension or pain.

If you are interested in trying Abhyangam- An Ayurvedic Massage, it is recommended to seek out a trained therapist who can guide you through the process safely and effectively. What are the benefits of Abhyangam- An Ayurvedic Massage?

The specific benefits of Abhyangam depend on the type of oil used, as well as the techniques and pressure utilized during the massage. However, some potential advantages of this therapy include reducing stress, improving circulation, boosting the immune system, and promoting overall relaxation and well-being.

In addition to the physical benefits, Abhyangam is also thought to stimulate the flow of prana, or life force energy, throughout the body. This can help to balance the doshas and promote mental clarity and emotional stability.

Overall, Abhyangam is a gentle yet powerful Ayurvedic therapy that can be beneficial for a wide range of health conditions, as well as for promoting overall wellness and vitality.

Abhayangam massage is considered highly beneficial in Ayurveda due to the following reasons:

  1. Relieves stress and anxiety: Abhayangam massage helps promote relaxation, reduces stress, anxiety, and improves sleep quality.
  2. Increases circulation: Abhayangam massage improves circulation by stimulating the lymphatic and circulatory systems, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach the cells more easily.
  3. Enhances immunity: Regular sessions of Abhayangam massage may help boost the immune system by flushing out toxins and promoting healthy blood flow.
  4. Reduces pain and stiffness: Abhayangam massage can help reduce pain and stiffness in the muscles and joints by relaxing them, improving flexibility and mobility.
  5. Treats skin conditions: Abhayangam massage can help treat various skin conditions such as dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis due to the use of nourishing Ayurvedic oils.
  6. Aids detoxification: Abhayangam massage can help facilitate detoxification of the body by stimulating the lymphatic system to flush out toxins.
  7. Balances Doshas: Abhayangam massage helps balance the three Doshas or the fundamental energies of the body – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, thereby promoting overall well-being.

Overall, Abhayangam massage is a holistic approach that not only provides physical relaxation and rejuvenation but also calms and balances the mind, body, and soul.

The basic steps for Abhayangam massage are as follows :

  1. The patient is asked to lie down on a comfortably padded massage table or ground.
  2. The massage therapist heats the Ayurvedic oil to a comfortable temperature, mixes it with herbs and other ingredients to suit the patient’s needs.
  3. The therapist begins the massage by applying the oil to the patient’s scalp and massaging gently.
  4. Using long, smooth strokes, the therapist applies the oil to the rest of the body, starting with the neck, shoulders, arms, chest, abdomen, back, and legs, and concluding with the feet.
  5.  During the massage, the therapist uses circular, kneading, and squeezing motions, as well as stretching and joint mobilization, to relax the muscles and relieve tension.
  6. Special attention is paid to certain areas of the body, such as the head, ears, face, hands, feet, and joints, which are considered areas of energy and vitality in Ayurveda.
  7. The therapist may also use acupressure, marma point stimulation, or other techniques to help balance the body’s energy and promote healing.
  8. The massage typically lasts for 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the patient’s needs and preferences.
  9. After the massage, the patient is advised to take Swedanam- Full body steam for 10-15 minutes.
