Shirodhara
A healthy way to reduce stress and anxiety
What is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves pouring a warm oil over the forehead in a continuous stream. It is a deeply relaxing treatment that can help balance the mind and body, reduce stress, alleviate anxiety and improve sleep.
If you are interested in trying shirodhara, it is recommended to seek out a trained practitioner who can guide you through the process safely and effectively. Shirodhara should be performed by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner for safety reasons. We, sahaj ayurveda, adalaj have trained staff and therapist who can perform Shirodhara treatment in a better way. We have female therapist for female assistance and male therapist for male assistance.
What are the benefits of Shirodhara?
Shirodhara produces numerous benefits like stress reduction, relaxation, improved sleep, mental clarity, relief from headaches, and reducing anxiety.
The general steps involved in a Shirodhara session:
- The person seeking treatment lies down comfortably on a special table or mat.
- A container of warm ayurvedic oil made with special herbs is suspended above the person’s forehead, usually from a frame or stand.
- The practitioner will adjust the height and speed of the oil flow, depending on the individual’s needs and preferences.
- The warm oil is poured in a continuous stream across the forehead and scalp for about 30-40 minutes. During this time period, one therapist gives a light head massage with gentle hands.
- The person is encouraged to relax during the treatment and may be covered with a blanket for warmth.
- After the treatment, the oil is gently wiped off and the person may rest for a few minutes before getting up.
It is important to note that the oils used in shirodhara may vary depending on the individual’s dosha (body type) and health status. The practitioner will often customize the treatment to meet the needs of each person.
How does Shirodhara work?
Shirodhara aims to balance the Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in the body. And this can be achieved by promoting relaxation, reducing stress levels, and creating a meditative state.
Does Shirodhara have any side effects?
No significant side effects linked to Shirodhara are reported. But some individuals may feel a heavy sensation in their head or might experience headaches after the therapy.
How frequently can one undergo Shirodhara?
The frequency of Shirodhara can vary depending on the individual’s health status. However, it is usually recommended to undergo Shirodhara maximum three days a week. We can continue the same therapy for 6-8 weeks.
